Black spot: Princes Highway near the intersection of Rawson Avenue.ROAD safety improvements will be made over the next fortnight to an accident “black spot” at Sutherland where 49 accidents were reported in five years.
Heathcote MP Lee Evans said work was due to start tomorrow on the Princes Highway at the intersection of Rawson Avenue.
Mr Evans said the 49 crashes in the five years to June 30, 2011, occurred within 100 metres of the intersection, and 26 happened on a wet surface.
A large number had involved vehicles veering off the road or into oncoming traffic.
He could not provide more recent figures before the Leader’s deadline.
Mr Evans said a high-friction asphalt road surface, designed to improve traction, would be laid, and curve warning signs installed.
Roads and Maritime Services would carry out work for two weeks between 8pm and 5am, excluding Saturdays, weather permitting.
Mr Evans said minor delays were expected and partial lane closures would be in place to create a safe working area.
