Tony Abbott has kicked Hepburn, Mount Alexander and Macedon Ranges shires in the guts by scrapping funding for Round Five of the Regional Development Australia Fund, unless projects are already the subject of signed contracts.
Almost $1 million in funding for important new and upgraded facilities will not proceed; projects like the upgrade of Tylden Rd, the upgrade of Macedon Ranges kindergartens, and installation of solar panels at Mount Alexander Shire.
The previous Labor Government had allocated $150 million for these and many other projects in the 2013-14 budget. These projects were to have provided community facilities and stimulus for new jobs.
Even though Mr Abbott promised ‘no surprises’ he is already wielding the razor and destroying our community fabric. And where is Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss on this matter? He has publicly claimed the projects had not been funded and that the money “did not exist”. That’s just not true. The money is there in the budget papers. It’s just that Mr Abbott and his colleagues don’t see community facilities and jobs as a priority.
