Whyalla Gift Carnival on again this weekend

The BHP Billiton Whyalla Gift Carnival/Food and Wine Fair is on again this Saturday, November 16.

Organisers Events Whyalla and the Mount Laura Lions Club have an action packed program scheduled from 2pm until 10.30pm.

The carnival will be held at Bennett Oval and will see the annual King and Queen of the Mountain and the Whyalla Gift being run.

Local runners taking part in the King and Queen of the Mountain will take on the challenge of running the six kilometres from Bennett Oval to Mount Laura and back, with $2300 worth of prizes to be awarded.

The Whyalla Gift will attract top runners from all over the state with prize money of $6000 up for grabs.

The little athletics will be holding its regular meeting starting at 2pm with running, walking and field events taking place.

The senior athletes will begin their 12 events at about 4.45pm.

Events Whyalla director John Schrapel said there would be a good number of athletes on show for the four to five hours.

There will also be a food and wine festival component to the evening with a number of local businesses present to showcase their products.

“There’ll be a range of food for people to enjoy, plenty of seating and shade,” Mr Schrapel said.

“People will be quite comfortable.”

Some of the food available will range from ribs and seafood through to Indian curries, barbecue food and gourmet ice cream.

Kirrihill wines will have an array of wines being offered for sale.

Entry to the event is free with all profits from the day to be donated to the Lions Club of Whyalla Mount Laura Gift Foundation to assist local athletes.

Entry into the King of the Mountain is still available by visiting the Events Whyalla office on Essington Lewis Avenue during business hours.
