The alleged male perpetrator, 28, handed himself in to police at St Marys police station at 2pm over the killing three hours earlier.
Police said they were called to Darling Point Apartments on Mona Road by a concerned resident just after 11am. Initial reports were that a man had forced his way into one of the apartments, where a couple was inside.
An altercation erupted and the intruder stabbed the man multiple times before running from the scene. Paramedics arrived a short time later but the victim, 30, died at the scene.
The woman, 30, was taken to hospital but her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
The apartment block and street were cordoned off and a manhunt began.
Police said the alleged perpetrator had been in a relationship with the female victim. Police said they were waiting to speak to the woman to find out if, or when, the relationship concluded.
On Monday, the suspect was being interviewed and charges were expected to be laid.
The female victim was receiving treatment in hospital on Monday night.
