Adam Rooney said the fire, which started about 8pm,began in his son’s room.

“My son was in there,” he said.

“The whole house just went up in a matter of minutes.”

Mr Rooney, his partner Michell Dean and six children, including six-year-old triplets, escaped uninjured.

“We have lost everything,” Mr Rooney said.

“As long the kids andMichell are OK, that is all that matters.”

Mr Rooney was treated for smoke inhalation.

The family of eight are staying at a relative’s one-bedroom unit in Kangaroo Flat.

Two fire trucksfrom Kangaroo Flat fire station and one truck from Bendigo station were dispatched to the brick-veneer building and housing commission homeabout8.14pm Sunday.

BendigoFire StationSenior Officer Darren Eenjes saidit took 15 firefighters half an hour to get the blaze under control.

“The house was well alight by the time the team arrived on the scene,” he said.

Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade Captain Andrew Purdywasthe officer in charge at the scene.

“The occupants were able to leave before the fire became too severe,”he said.

Fire investigators are still determining thecause ofthe fire.

Mr Purdy said residents must be extra-cautious coming intothe summer fire danger period.

“Please make sure your smoke alarms have batteries in them and they are working,” he said.

“Clean up the inside and outside of the house to protect yourself against the threat of fire.”
