NEW statistics for the Wimmera have seen the region become one of the unhealthiest in the country.
Over the past few weeks we have found out that our population smokes more than anyone else in the nation.
Our obesity rates are skyrocketing and heart disease and diabetes are becoming more prevalent.
In the wake of these statistics, Wimmera Health Care Group is taking a step in the right direction.
Yesterday’s Move4Life annual fun run saw crowds of people doing something positive for their health.
Participants walked or ran two, five or eight kilometres along the Wimmera River.
This great community initiative encourages people to get physical and healthy while enjoying a beautiful section of Horsham.
It was also promoted as a social event, with mental well-being just as vital to a healthy lifestyle as physical fitness.
Ararat was once known as the fattest town in Australia and weight-loss reality television show The Biggest Loser stepped into help.
Putting the spotlight on obesity has also helped curb the unhealthy trends.
People are becoming aware of the health issues affecting our region.
More people are starting to take the opportunity to get outside with friends and move for life.
Hopefully the statistics will change to reflect the hard work of those trying to improve.
So next time the sun is shining, stop and think about what you can do to improve your health too.
