Cup day and drinking culture is not a pretty sight

Melbourne Cup day is not only an excuse for having a bet but also getting involved in another “fine” Australian tradition, drinking to excess.

Seeing women dressed up for the event trying to walk straight on high heels while tanked is not a pretty sight, nor seeing some bloke spewing from far too many drinks.

Young people are growing up in a culture where gambling and drinking are accepted as being totally harmless activities whereas we know the adverse effects due to these pursuits, including loss of money, family breakdowns, domestic violence, criminal behaviour and even sexual exploitation.

It is a bizarre situation where the majority of a nation’s population will listen more intently to a race taking just over three minutes than any other public individual whether they be a politician or religious figurehead.
