CHILDCARE workers who want an alternative to working in day care centres may be able to run their own services out of their homes.

Mission Australia’s Penrith family day care program registers about 90 such home-based services within the Penrith local government area.

“It’s an opportunity for women who like working with children to provide childcare while being at home with their own children and earning an income,” the program manager, Nerryl Liston, said.

“Our role is to recruit and train carers and support and monitor them.”

An education support officer with Mission Australia, Donna Boyd, said this home-based childcare model also appealed to some parents.

“That’s because their children are more likely to get individual attention,” Ms Boyd said.

Home-based childcare is limited to five preschool age children and seven children up to the age of 12.

Workers must have the same training and accreditation required of all childcare educators.

The businesses must also demonstrate that they are safe for children and have adequate facilities.

“They need their own fenced backyard; it doesn’t have to be big,” Mrs Liston said.

“But homes these days have a lot of safety regulations already.

“For instance, swimming pools must have safety fences around them.”

Another education support officer with Mission Australia, Christine Craig, said home-based childcare could also provide stepping-stones to other positions in the industry.

“These educators have an understanding of what’s needed and could move into administration — on our co-ordinating committee for instance,” Ms Craig said.

Ms Boyd said those who were interested in a childcare career starting at home could call the family day-care program on 4724 3000.
