FORTY-four bus drivers are in the running for the titles of Bus Driver of the Year, School Bus Driver of the Year and Outstanding Customer Service.
The fifth annual Transdev Queensland Driver of the Year Awards attracted a record 644 nominations from the travelling public in the Redlands, who are among some 2.8 million passengers the local bus company moves every year.
Transdev managing director Colin Jennings said he had been “blown away” by the public’s response.
“It’s incredibly gratifying to have so many of our valued customers come forward and express their support and thanks for our drivers who are part of their daily routines and who strive to live our company values of safety, commitment, partnership, passion and performance,” Colin said.
“They are truly in the service of the people, helping to connect communities and often assisting our most vulnerable citizens, including the elderly, infirm, disabled and our children. They become listeners, tour guides, navigators and, hopefully, a reliable, friendly and trusted resource in the process,” Colin said.
Nominations came from a wide variety of bus users who shared all kinds of experiences with Transdev, Colin said.
“This has ranged from a grateful dad, whose 11-year-old son, using the school bus for the first time, had missed his stop, but with the help of the driver was reunited with his anxious father, to a former taxi driver turned city commuter who was very impressed with his driver’s ability to safely and calmly navigate peak hour traffic into the city day-in, day-out, all the while with a smile on his face and a bus load of ‘not necessarily morning people’,” he said.
All customers who submitted a nomination form are now in the running for first prize of a mystery bus tour for four people valued at $200, including morning tea and lunch, and runner-up lucky prize draws of 10 double movie passes. The winners will be drawn on Wednesday, November 13 and will be contacted directly.
The Driver of the Year finalists will be named later this month, with the winners announced at Transdev’s annual staff Christmas party and awards night on December 7. Results will be published in the Bayside Bulletin on December 10.
